What I am thankful for as a writer

What a year. Seriously. I am blown away. And still have 2 more coming in December. For those of you that might not know, this blog has been going for just over 2 years. It took a while for me to find my voice and grow as a writer. But beginning in March of this year I became a published writer. And it has just grown from there.

In March, Notches came out. And then a series of poems and shorts in various anthologies. Each one showcasing how I was evolving. All while posting new poetry everyday on this little blog. Over the last eight months, Death’s Head Press, Raw Earth Ink, Potter’s Grove Press, Deadmans Tome and Terror Tract have given me a chance. It’s amazing the amount of creativity they have amongst them. Awe inspiring. Yet, somehow I snuck my way in with them.

And now I have my hands on (UN)POETIC: a collection of poetry. And that’s craziest of all. When I started, everyone said poetry is so niche. Stick to fiction. But while I may be a writer, I know in my heart, I am a poet. Maybe not a great one, but I am what I am and nothing can change that. And they don’t understand, it isn’t the writing as much as the poetry that defines it. I know who I am after so long searching.

And that is what I am thankful. The great people that saw something I couldn’t see myself. That believed in it enough to put me beside brilliant writers. I said when I got the first contract, I want World Domination. But not just for me, but for all of my talented friends. This ragtag group that lifts one another up. And for the amazing readers that dive through the ocean of words and find something we wrote resonates with them.

I am truly thankful for you. My friends, my family, my tribe. So find your voice and scream from the mountains. The world deserves your interpretation of the song those words sing. We are Legion and we shall be heard.

  1. We can all be thankful you didn’t heed that utterly nonsense advice to stick to fiction. Anyone who would encourage you not to write what you are drawn to write is not worth listening to.

    Same goes for all the “industry standards” advice you probably get too.

      1. Yeah, me either.

        Me too. I’ve been fortunate to have met some good people on here. I’ve always been a loner but working together for the benefit of one another is the way to go. Like you said, when one succeeds, we all succeed.

  3. I remember questioning whether knowing an author personally would make reading them better or does it hinder it.
    In this particular case I do believe anyone who reads you and doesn’t know you is missing one of the facets of the entire experience.

    1. I just do the only thing I know how to do. People like you and River do the hard work. Along with being brilliant writers. I don’t know how I got lucky enough to stumble into such esteemed company. I also try not to think too hard about it, lest everyone suddenly realize I’ve been drinking the beer and eating the snacks and get kicked out. I’ll be over here, trying to adjust the playlist and throw some Ramones into the mix.
