mermaids and sharks

the bitter sting of her rejection, her silence, her anger

the things she promised she wouldn’t do at the beginning but slipped into like comfortable shoes

has gone

i wasn’t enough, she made that clear, it was the words i now see as honey flavored falsehoods, the promises that stopped meaning anything when the road got hard, that hurt still

they say there are other fish in the sea but she was a mermaid, a queen of atlantis

and i am a shark, never sleeping, never stopping, or i will die

it will just be without her

she is better off this way

and i have lost the will to care
