st paul and elm

row upon row
identical black hoodies
they stand
bouncing on their heels
their breath
forming cumulous
above unshaven faces

every car is white
on the roads
in the garages
a sea of white cars
a mass of black hoodies
snarling mouths
mistrustful eyes

the sparrows dart
brown streaks moving
from branch to branch
as the white cars honk
black forms congregating
the skies a tangle
of puffy brown smears

i am glitching again
unable to circumnavigate
the dark corners
driving down spirals
far below the frozen cityscape
to hide in familiar hells
far from roiling seas of gray
