hairspray haze

when i was a kid
just after dinosaurs
but well before
cell phones and memes
i remember pedophilia
was as mainstream as
it could be possibly be
top ten songs and
the bands which sang them
proclaimed their desire
openly as stadiums
filled with kids all
screamed every word
it was en vogue to
sexualize children
from hollywood to
the radio stations
the media treated it
as an acceptable taboo

mtv showed interviews
with glam metal bands
and legions of teen fans
willing to do anything
sometimes with their mothers
for a taste of rock and roll
late night infomercials
filled with barely legal
girls plied with drugs
then filmed for profit

it was an epidemic of
willful abuse under the
blind eye of the law
there was no misunderstanding
of lyrical content when
the chorus bragged about
how she was only seventeen
sung by a thirty year old
in more make up and spandex
than good taste dictated

the government is so concerned
about trans athletes when
men dressed up as woman
sold out stadiums
and left broken girls behind
in a trail of abuse from
one coast to the other
every single summer for
the entirety of the eighties
this wasn’t a drag review
it was systematic abuse

it isn’t any wonder now
the rich and powerful scum
who were raised on the idea
of chasing only innocence
created a network where
they could continue to abuse
children outside public notice
they partied through the era
where they didn’t need to hide
their perverse pleasures
their sickness was celebrated
in their minds it wasn’t wrong
it was what they deserved
and now they have the wealth
to shield themselves from law

back then we were just victims
no one ever took seriously
and now the victims are shamed
for demanding justice served
it exposes the entirety of the system
innocence is just another commodity
to be exploited by the haves
because it is the only thing left
they can steal from the have nots

everyone of the bastards
deserves public execution
they never tried to save
any of the children except
for themselves
