twelve hours
a one and a half hour flight
took twelve total to reach it’s destination
storms in dallas
we flew for three hours before stopping in shreveport
and as we sat stopped
i entertained the angry passengers
telling jokes and stories
keeping them laughing
even as my world fell down around me
ever the ignoble fool
rachael sat next to me
we laughed and joked
fred trying to get home to san antonio
thirty people united in distress as we all desperately needed to reach home
laughing uproariously at the mad fool
i’ve never been on a flight like that
when they announced we were going to continue on
everyone continued talking and joking
trying to rile me up and keep me going
normally flights are spent staring at screens or listening to music
even the stewardesses joined in
passing out free liquor and dancing with me in the aisle
it may have been hell
but it was our hell
and as we waited for an two hours for our bags we kept it up
no longer disparate strangers
but friends
i even got a couple of their numbers and invited to hang out
rachael wants me to go to her sorority and meet the girls and party
it was the most wonderful horrific event and i’m glad to have gotten to be a part of it
so when you see the illiterate fool with a frown
know it isn’t always that way
sometimes he turns on the atrophied parts of his weak mind
and puts on the greatest show on earth
even when all he wants is to be home alone and hiding from the world that does it’s best to destroy him
which is all the time
and he sits back and takes it
because every now and then there is a singular moment in time that makes it all worth while
not often
but occasionally
