a raven and a roof

the roof on the church
had partially collapsed
i can only assume
it was from the weight
of unanswered prayers

i have never
found myself
understanding so profoundly
a sentiment more
as i sit alone in the cold

as if to give an answer
a raven took wing
launching itself
like an ebon dart
against the velvet sky

the effortless grace
in which it flew
a shadow against the darkness
it’s caw the only trace
it was not a dream at all
