pray

i pray
with
doll hands
clenched tightly
in my fists
a rosary
of spent shells
a crucifix
that has seen
too many
last fixes
a burnt spoon
a crusty needle
empty baggies
with residues
of days spent
lost

i pray
with
indecent devotion
the belief
of a magician
the truth
of a trickster
the hope
of a drowning man

yet
they have been
heard
the meaning
not lost
in the coiled
word play
so
with lack
of understanding
fists clenched
tightly
upon doll hands
i give
thanks

      1. I am trying to drift off to sleep….I am on an adventure in Turkey during Ramadan and the sun just set and and the haunting singing that goes all over the city just ended along with the howling of feral dogs. The practicing Muslims fast all day and can eat when the sun sets. First time in a Muslim country…..lots to take in.
