a painting of lilies

there is a painting
of lilies
on the wall
behind the toilet

been on the road
for a week
spending the weekend
in the hotel
in the northern suburbs
of atlanta
for work training

shuttle to class
shuttle to the hotel
shuttle to the store
shuttle to the airport
limo to the apartment
shuffle to bed
in comfort

there is a painting
of lilies
hanging on the wall
behind the toilet

early rise
for free breakfast
shuffling down
the empty hallway
to wait for the van
to wait for the teacher
so far
from home

this was my weekend
with the kids
spent in a hotel
in the northern suburbs
of atlanta

and i see
that painting of lilies
hanging on the wall
behind the toilet
it doesn’t make me
think of home
but of the things
i am missing

swirling
with the soft depression
that holds you close
as you tape your cheeks
to look like a smile
as you stand
pissing too strong coffee
into the toilet
with lilies
painted in watercolor
hanging in front
of your tired face

too soft bed
with too many pillows
too many covers
kicked off
onto the floor
as the neighbors
stomp and slam
tossing and turning
bitching and moaning

that it isn’t
your bed
your smell
your home
your place

the one that you are
paying for
that is
sitting empty
while you stand
looking at lilies
hanging sadly
where hundreds
of different faces
stared sadly
while wishing

for home
