the difference between
callus and callous
is if it is
your hand or heart

affect and effect
is merely
intent versus act
i knew each callus
on her dainty hand
as i held it
better than
i knew my own
with the callous
disinterest
i held myself in
she knew the effect
her affected disdain
cast upon
the scrambled mass
of insecurities
that made up
the whole
of my shattered psyche
