a chilled whistle rings true

in the cold chill
that whispers
the back of
my neck
down my spine
to blossom
an array of
nervous endings
that melt into
the ones and zeros
in the overheated
hastily wired
to the furnace
in my belly
that burns bright blue
in the
absence of you

a seagull told a raven who told a pigeon that told a dove who told a sparrow that told a robin who sang to every cardinal for fifty miles that he saw the woman with wildflowers in her hair

i listened
at the window
with a smile
they captured
every nuance of
i love you
in halting whistles
that echoed
my day
enough to
the chill
across my neck
as the smoke
into the
vapor of promise
on the horizon
in your smile
