i saw
a pair of
high heels
on the side
of the road
as i drove
this morning
remembering
the night
downtown
where we stopped
every couple
blocks
to kiss on
darkened
side streets
it took an hour
and a half
to go
twenty miles
you smelled
like citrus
your lips
tasted like
candy
with a hint of
vodka
as my fingers
tangled
in your hair
the hunger
pressed our mouths
hard against
one another
your strap broke
as we crossed
the street
and you laughed
before pulling
a pair of
flip flops
from your purse
and we left
the shoes
in the crosswalk
a phantom
headed to
the clubs
you asked me
to take you home
but you
were drunk
and i was
intoxicated
by you
and when we
arrived
you were surprised
i took you
to your home
despite both
of our desires
i saw a pair
of high heels
on the side
of the road
this morning
and remembered
a past
that nearly
was something
more
maybe we just
had found
one another
at the wrong time
or maybe
we were given
exactly what
we needed
for that moment
i hope you
are happy
wherever it is
you finally
found yourself
it was
hit or miss
for a while
for me
but i am
where i was
always headed
happily
in love
writing
way too much
and occasionally
reminded
of you
and a pair
of shoes
left in a crosswalk
on a dark night
long
long
ago
