herds

i watched a sheep dog
lazily wander
nipping at the tails
of vagrant sheep
keeping the flock tended
as the wind swept
across the tall grass
a wave washing over
verdant seas
the sun beating down
merciless intent
blurring the emptiness
an illusionary diversion
a cop car on the side
of the highway
a sea of brakelights
flashing in panic
another sheepdog
tending an even dumber
herd of sheep
as the sun reflects
off of the asphalt
washing out all colors
as a fleet of carbon copy
vehicles in shades of
maroon sameness
paper angels holding
indistinct hands
flapping in the exhaust
leaving a carbon monoxide
tinge to summer heat
