watching out

i watched her
through the
peephole as she
knocked on the door
there was no
reason for her
to be outside
a doorway that
she had chosen
to exit for
the final time
years before
she waited with
her ear turned
hoping to hear
signs of movement
and then i watched
as she slinked
over to the shadows
waiting to see if
i would open up
to watch her
walk away again
i wonder if she
knew i was there
that we made a
brief sort of
eye contact as
i looked out
through the one-way
convex lens
i wonder what it was
she could have
possibly wanted
after the way she
so clearly left things
but not enough to
speak to her
what words can
ever truly make up
for the actions and
words spat in anger
that she knows
i will never forget
or what need burns
so desperately that
she would even try
i watched her
through the
peephole as she
knocked on a door
that was permanently
barred from entry
