a gray deluge
the city no more
than a smudge
blotting out
the dour horizon
the rain runs
chaotic pathways
down the glass
mocking the frantic
lane changes by
drivers desperate
to shave seconds
off the commute
a perfect day
for unpoetic longing
chalkdust dreamshatter
pulling every hue
into a black sluice
spinning endlessly
around clogged drains
the last time
i offered my heart
she took a savage bite
and smiled as red
ran down her chin
before politely
declining more
the rain washes
away the scabs to show
a panoramic penitence
in supple scarring
as the horns sound out
along these dreary roads
