if you squint

she looked at me and laughed as i sat on the couch in my boxers

you’re not bad looking from across the room, if i take my glasses off, she said between giggles

i’m an adonis if you squint, i replied as i sucked in my gut and tried to affect a look of disinterest

that set off another bout of laughter

she’s stunning when she smiles

i don’t know what ten men would say if they saw her walking down the street

but i know i would slow down and do a double take for sure

and she knows it

it’s probably her attitude that gave me a chance in the first place

smart ass with a big old smile

she has no idea how gorgeous i find that sarcastic mouth of hers with those crooked teeth

or maybe she does

damned if i know

she is as much as mystery to me as the inside of a black hole

but there is something celestial about how she makes me feel as she sucks me into her gravitational pull

i would happily free fall into her eyes

there’s just one problem to this dream girl

she’s just a dream

i must have fallen asleep while watching tv

as i wipe the sleep from my eyes and look blearily across the room where she had just been sitting there is nothing

i’m alone

free falling into this malaise

the phantom smile like the cheshire cat slowly fading into the nothingness that consumes me

i don’t bother sucking in my gut

i know i’m an adonis

if you squint

and forget your glasses

who am i kidding

sometimes i fear i am as false as she is

just the nightmare of my dream girl

somewhere she is going to wake with a start

and i will fade away

if i was ever here to begin with
