picnic

she asked me
to take her to the moon
for a picnic
i thought about it long and hard
it wasn’t difficult
to set up the shuttle ride
i packed a blanket
and some food
we held hands
as the rocket
shuddered and shook
earth fell away
like a blue marble
beneath us
when we landed
and bounded out
into the one sixth gravity
it was a blast
leaping about
in our gold-visored space suits
we explored craters
looked for little green men
then watched the sunrise
from the edge
of the dark side
our blanket and food
slowly floated away
as we held hands
lost
in how insignificant we were
yet together
there was nothing else
that mattered…
