fool(ish) pursuits

i sought the most beautiful stone to place upon your finger
nothing was ever good enough in my eyes
not for you

maybe a stone from the riverbed
would have been enough
smoothed by the ever flowing stream
a symbol of my love for you

a fallen star set in onyx
to show how long my feelings traveled
before you bore witness to me
on bended knee

an acorn
for the potential of everlasting adoration
planted in my chest
with your single glance

we are all just carbon atoms
set in disarray
so there is no need
to set an array of carbon upon your finger

i spent so long searching
the only thing forged
was a chain around my own wrists
as you sat waiting for me to simply say the words in my heart
