lighthouse keeper’s soliloquy

the willow
bends
but never
breaks
the rock
reduced
to gravel
by the sea
the lighthouse
stands
silently watching
learning neither lesson
left alone
to guard the ships
that crest
upon the waves
a beacon
of steadfast
solitude

a lone man
keeps the light
burning
battered by elements
in an oiled
canvas jacket
deep lines
mark
his leathery face
as the spray
of cold water
mists across
his squinting eyes
with aching knees
and
gnarled fingers
the lighthouse keeper’s
soliloquy
