drag my body to the river
let it float out towards the sea
drag my body to the river
don’t shed a tear for me
wrap my heart with barbed wire, broken fingers from too many fights, chewed glass every morning, drank gasoline on sleepless nights
i didn’t go looking for trouble, but it followed me everyday, and i was never one to back down, it was best to stay out of my way
bloody knuckles and carpet burn, black eyes and broken teeth, another fractured dream of the darkness swimming just beneath
so drag my body to the river
watch it float on to the sea
drag my body to the river
let the current set my spirit free
i fought my inner demons, used liquor to ease my pain, smoked anything passed my way, laughed as it all went down the drain
never cared much for smiling, no point in faking a grin, let the mortician make me pretty, guess in that end i’ll finally win
whiskey on the rocks, set down the bottle as you leave, just me and all the voices, there ain’t nothing left to believe
there ain’t nothing left for me
as i float on towards the sea
so drag my body to the river
the lonesome fool without a name
just let the river take me to sea
and lightning set my form aflame
drag me to those muddy banks
leave two coins upon my eyes
drag me down to that river
when the poetry finally dies
