rejection letter

oh the sting, the venomous stinger in which the words inject poison into an already poisonous vein

not a good fit, not the right theme, the words of your soul did not shine the right way, did not convey

but please try again

spit more of your lack of talent into space, bare yourself to be judged unworthy, grab a morsel of hope and allow it to be dashed on the rocks of familiar failure

don’t lose heart, just the pieces of it you asked the world to see and the world in general found it to be unworthy

it not you, it’s us, think of this as another failed attempt in a series of failed attempts, think of it like pursuing love

and we all know how that has gone, right heart wrong time, wrong heart no chance, and the occasional what the hell were you thinking

it’s like that

so frame your rejection letter proudly, know you fall in the top percentile of failure, carry on and keep trying, amass a stack of these, use them to warm you on the winter nights

or stop trying

the world of poetry will keep turning with or without your insipid lines

thanks for wasting fifteen minutes of our life

people with actual skill
