Two slices of toast. Lightly buttered. A steaming cup of coffee. A small glass of juice. He keeps eyeing his phone. Fingers twitch with need. His face emotionless. He sits rigidly in the chair. The birds still trill a song of life and light. Another car starts. Another. He sits with trembling fingers. He swipes the screen. She smiles at him. His face is buried in her hair. His lips on her throat just out of shot. The smell of lavender and citrus in his nose.

Ten new emails. Five missed calls. Two voicemails. He taps the icon. Deletes the new voicemails unheard. His finger hovers over the screen. He closes his eyes and let’s the digit tap the screen.

“Hey honey. I’m running a little late tonight. Be a dear and order take out. Number three, no onions, same as every time. I’ll be there as soon as a I can be. Maybe we can shower before dinner. I love you.”

The first of the daily tears lands with a plop in his coffee. His hands tighten, knuckles turn white as he stares unseeing at the wall. He reacts without thought or notice. The plate hits the wall and shatters. The toast falls to the floor. Orange juice runs across the table to slowly drip over the edge. The surface of the coffee ripples with each new tear. He reaches over and let’s his finger stroke the screen.

“Hey honey. I’m running a little late tonight. Be a dear and order take out. Number three, no onions, same as every time. I’ll be there as soon as a I can be. Maybe we can shower before dinner. I love you.”

He stands as she talks. Unbuttons his shirt. Removes his pants and hangs them over the chair. Picks up his phone before the pulpy lake can engulf it. Walks back down the hallway. Lays down and let’s his eyes slowly focus on the shadows of the ceiling. The soft bear clutched to his chest as the world continues to slowly crumble in upon itself. She speaks softly from the bedside table and he mouths along with every word.
