why the mockingbird sings

the mockingbird sits
in the old oak tree
the silent world
as the first hint of light
the far eastern horizon
it hops
from one leg
to the other
ready to fire off
into the slowly
filtered dawn
a cacophonous blast
a fire burns
in the black orbs
a need to shout
to the universe
to declare
that he has found
a singular joy
one that comes
from the sound
of her laughter

the mockingbird
hops on the branch
willing the sun
to rise
to cast light
upon a world in which
he has found
the counterpoint
to the ferocious
song of his heart
making it something
more expansive
the way her words
accentuate his
with subtle magic
in this moment
i know why
the mockingbird does sing
to greet the fiery eye
in the azure sky
because he is filled
with contentment
that he wishes to spread
across the land

the mockingbird prances
the fool sips coffee
for once
the simplicity of the song
and pure joy
that comes with dancing
like no one is watching
as your heart
happily sings along

  1. Mike, good thing I’m typing. Too emotional to speak. This touched my heart. This love is beautiful. Thank you. I would love to share it if you would be cool with that. ♥.

  2. Beautiful would be a severe understatement. This is so fascinating and striking. The fool sips coffee and my heart sings along, smiling along the way of this beautiful poem. You really made my day.
