shudders

rainy days like these
remind me
of when i fought
in the secret war
to liberate canada
from their beaver overlords
the battlefields
smelled of maple syrup
bullets and bodies
were strewn aboot
we fought hard
across the frozen tundra
against the furry bastards
on top of their moose mounts
war is hell, eh

the world shudders around me

i can still remember
seeing the redcoats
as they stomped their way
through the snowy woods
on their way
to our camp
i was young
the musket cold and heavy
in my shaking hands
the whites of their eyes
the captain said
then fire
it feels like yesterday
smelling the powder
hearing the screams

the world shudders again

in bed
planes flying low above
the whistling
as payloads are dropped
the sound coming
after the shockwaves hit
the world is washed out
light pierces the veil
i can hear
the beasts at the door
mutated monsters
oozing irradiated blood
from patchy sores

the world shudders

beams of green energy

shudders

mortars fall

shudders

cavalry charges
plumes of thick dust
stirred up by hooves

shudders

arrows zip from the trees

shudders

death

shudders

for god
for country

shudders

it never ends
never

i lay my head
on the pillow
fearing
what comes next
what comes after
what came
before

if love
was as easy to make
as war
the world
would be covered
in cast away roses
instead of
discarded shells

and still it shudders

on and on
